Orange City Arts Announces 40th Anniversary Season!

For 40 years, Orange City Arts has been demonstrating that you don’t have to travel to the big city to enjoy world class entertainment, and the 2017-18 season adds more proof to the pudding.

July 11th, 2017 begins Orange City Arts’ 40th year of providing top quality arts experiences to Sioux County, and starting September, we are celebrating with an extra-special lineup that includes music, acrobatics, theatre, and the same incredible artistry audiences have come to expect from us.

We begin our celebration with Felicitas: A One-Woman Show on September 9. New York actress Libby Skala presents this true story of a spunky, tough-love Austrian infant nurse who escapes the Third Reich to nurture order in American society, one baby at a time. A moving tribute to a life of service and sacrifice, Skala gleaned this story from her own family history and shares her aunt’s journey to inspire us all.

From Latvia, the spectacular performance of B—The Underwater Bubble Show on October 10 follows overworked, self-absorbed everyman “Mr. B” as he is magically transported to a land where fantasy becomes reality and daydreams come to life. Recommended for ages 0-150, this astonishing Cirque du Soleil-inspired extravaganza invites audiences to come with Mr. B to “Bubbleandia” and rediscover the wonder that is all around us.

The iconic Boston Brass ensemble has been captivating audiences of all ages and around the world with their unique brand of entertainment for over 30 years. Lively repartee and a generous helping of humor and personality “bridge the ocean of classical formality” to delight crowds with a wide selection of musical styles in a fun and friendly atmosphere. They’ll be with us on November 3 in partnership with Northwestern College Music Department and Woodbury-Central High School.

Just in time to commemorate the 100th anniversary of US involvement in WW1, Orange City Arts is ringing in the holiday season on November 24 with Theatre Latte Da’s All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914. On Christmas Day on the Western Front, a German soldier stepped into No Man’s Land singing “Stille Nacht,” thus beginning an extraordinary night of camaraderie, music, and peace. All is Calm is a musical theatre retelling of this remarkable true story, told in the words of the men who lived it, and accompanied by the timeless and transcendent music of the season.

On February 3, Orange City Arts partners with Mad River Theater Works to present Freedom Riders, a remarkable family-friendly musical exploring the valiant and courageous personalities behind one of the most critical chapters in American history. Set in 1961, while bus lines and cities throughout the American South still enforced a rigid system of separating black and white citizens, the “Freedom Riders” demonstrated how non-violent protest and working together could combat cruelty and affect change. For this special event, all tickets will be available with special “Pay-What-You-Can” pricing!

The extraordinary Shattered Glass Ensemble comes to us on April 4. This conductorless chamber orchestra from NYC has performed repertoire ranging from Mozart to crossover projects with Grammy®-nominated hip-hop artists. In the spirit of collaboration, Shattered Glass members regularly rotate the role of principal player and participate in a democratic system for creating and selecting programs. The result is a fresh and exciting experience that has been resonating with audiences nationwide, from TED talks to Carnegie Hall.
