Jim Schaap is a stranger in a strange land. He lived in Sioux Center for most of a lifetime and now resides in rural Alton, just down the road, and says he comes into OC only for donuts and the OCAC. He’s the only officially retired member, so he often has to be prodded to stay awake at meetings. He’s a writer—novels, short stories, essays, all kinds of things—and loves to photograph the wide openness of Siouxland’s gentle western hills. He taught (literature and writing) for forty years, 36 of them at Dordt College. Forty years sounds like some kind of punishment, but it wasn’t, he says. Still, he loves being retired. He’s been blogging for almost a decade at Stuff in the Basement, siouxlander.blogspot.com.
