ORANGE CITY – It’s the Orange City Area Community Band — taking the stage for its second concert of the summer on Wednesday, July 8. The show is part of the Onstage Orange City series, sponsored by Orange City Arts.
The community band’s performance begins at 7:00pm at Windmill Park.
The band features musicians from not only Orange City, but also Sioux Center, Hospers, Rock Rapids, Le Mars, Boyden and more.
Percussionist Ashley Van Wyhe and her mom Susan, who plays saxophone, drive from Rock Rapids to make music with the band. Ashley doesn’t get the opportunity to play with a symphonic band now that she graduated from Northwestern College. “I love getting back on percussion and playing with talented musicians that have the same love for performing…” And she sees friends. “It feels like a family reunion.”
Steve and Barbara Collins moved back to their hometown, Le Mars, last fall, after living in the Boston area for years. It was the Le Mars Community High all-school reunion — 15 years ago — that reunited them with their musical instruments. Bringing out their saxophone and flute in ’00 reminded them that they missed performing… they missed being part of a band. So they promptly joined the Lexington Bicentennial Band, one of the top community bands in the Boston area.
They are part of the Orange City Area Community Band this summer.
Director of the community band is Dan Mangold, who serves as band director at MOC-Floyd Valley Middle School. Mangold’s assistant is Char Ten Clay.
Come early for some energetic music by the “3-week Summer Choir for Kids,” at 6:45. This choir of 13 young ladies, ages 7 to 11, is directed by Amanda Vander Stelt.
