ORANGE CITY, SIOUX CENTER — The SchoolHouse Company brings the musical comedy, Smoke on the Mountain, to stages in Orange City and Sioux Center on August 12 and 14.
It’s the story of a Saturday night gospel sing at a country church in North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains, including rousing bluegrass songs, a young and enthusiastic pastor, and hilariously imperfect people.
The New York Post called Smoke on the Mountain “totally beguiling… foot-stomping soul food,” the New York Times said the show is “a charming and funny celebration of Americana,” and the Philadelphia Daily News said, “A sophisticated audience went simply wild.”
The SchoolHouse Company’s Lois Estell first heard about Smoke on the Mountain from her aunt and uncle, who had seen it in Michigan. “They thoroughly enjoyed the show,” said Estell, “and thought we would too!” Estell agreed.
The family-friendly show will be presented in Orange City’s Windmill Park Wednesday, Aug. 12 and in Sioux Center’s Te Paske Theatre Friday, Aug. 14, both shows at 7:00pm. Rain location for the Orange City show is Unity Christian Knight Center. No admission will be charged.
Leanne Bonnecroy directs the show. Actors are Drew Lemke, Chris Haak, Scott Amsberry, Joseph Slegers, Amanda Vander Stelt, Jenna Vande Zandschulp and Estell.
The Orange City show will be held in conjunction with the 7th annual cycle show and benefit for Big Brothers Big Sisters, sponsored by the Orange City Chamber. The cycle show is 5:00-8:00pm, and a freewill donation meal of hot dogs, pop and chips will be from 5:30-7:00pm. Sponsors of the evening are Iowa State Bank and Pizza Ranch Restaurant, in conjunction with Orange City Arts.
The Sioux Center show is sponsored by Sioux Center Recreation and Arts Council. Free ice cream bars will be given at intermission in Sioux Center.
The SchoolHouse Company was founded in 2008 by Northwestern College theatre graduates, and presents two or more annual productions in northwest Iowa annually.
